Alice in Tumblr-land by Tim Manley

Alice in Tumblr-land
Series: N/A, Standalone
Publication date: November 5, 2013
Publisher: Penguin Books
Genres: Adult, Fairytales, Humor
Format: Hardcover
Source: Book Depository

Disney meets Lena Dunham in this illustrated humor book featuring your favorite fairy-tale characters dating and finding their way in 21st-century America.

The Ugly Duckling still feels gross compared to everyone else, but now she’s got Instagram, and there’s this one filter that makes her look awesome. Cinderella swaps her glass slippers for Crocs. The Tortoise and the Hare Facebook stalk each other. Goldilocks goes gluten free. And Peter Pan finally has to grow up and get a job, or at least start paying rent.

Here are more than one hundred fairy tales, illustrated and re-imagined for today. Instead of fairy godmothers, there’s Siri. And rather than big bad wolves, there are creepy dudes on OkCupid. In our brave new world of social networking, YouTube, and texting, fairy tales can once again lead us to "happily ever after”—and have us laughing all the way.

I really enjoyed Alice in Tumblr-land, it is a quick, light and fun read.

I love the modern twist, and how easy it is to picture it! Manley has taken some of my favorite fairytales and changed them into ordinary people, and I enjoyed that. Peter Pan having a hard time because all he thinks about is the internet, Rapunzel thinking that the people liking her new profile picture hated her old hair, and just never told her.

Some of the stories was more on the adult side of the scale with stories about Lancelot being gay and the beast (from Beauty and the Beast) having some weird fetiches.

This book also has some great quotes, which is actually also some lessons on life, and just some that are great to keep in the back of your head. Here is an example;

I love how this book was an actual page-turner, because every page was a new story, you never got that feeling that you needed a break. And you know how you keep saying "just one more chapter" and keeps on reading 20 more, that is what happens with this book, it keeps you reading because you want to read the next story, and then the next and so on. Basically, that "just one more story", is never actually just one more story.

But I think it would be amazing to read the original stories as a child or have them read aloud, and then as a teenager or adult to read this! Because, this is a great book!

This book actually originated from Tim Manley's blog: Fairytales for twenty-somethings, if you either want to read this book or already have read it - then check out his blog, because there is some new stories and some older stories that is not included in the book. Oh, and if you think about buying this book, check this page to see how it looks in real life!

Challenges: Full House: re-read / TBR pile
Resolutions: re-read some books / Read the books I already own

Books I want to re-read

New Moon by Stephenie Meyer. This was one of the first series that got me into reading, so I want to re-read it and see if I still like it.
Uglies by Scott Westerfeld. I wanted to read this a couple of years ago, and then I got the box set, and the series just fell flat for me. But I am debating on whether it was just me having way too high expectations or if it's just because I really did not like it.
The Jane Austen Book Club by Karen Joy Fowler. I want to read every single one of Jane Austen's novels, and then I will re-read this.
The Fault in Our Stars by John Green. I talk about this way too much - but if I talk about it too long, I seriously get all depressed and start to cry. But I still want to re-read it, because it was seriously amazing!
The Order of the Phoenix by J.K. Rowling. I got the whole series for Christmas in 2012, so I am currently re-reading my way through it. I got through the first 4 quickly, but as you know, the bad things happen in the last 3... So I know I am going to cry when somebody I love dies... And I cannot handle that right now.
The Ocean at the End of the Lane by Neil Gaiman. I read this back in July or August, and I feel like I did not appreciate it enough - so I will re-read it slowly and see if that makes me like it better.
Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher. I have actually read this 2 times already, and I cry everytime. But I really like this book, and I disovered some new things the last time I read it - maybe that will happen again.
Dahs & Lily's Book of Dares by Rachel Cohn and David Levithan. I loved this book, so I will buy it and re-read it in December!
A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness. This book is something else, it is very deep and thought provoking and I love it.
Mockingjay (Hunger Games #3) by Suzanne Collins. I just finished reading Catching Fire last year (literally the 31st December) so I want to finish re-reading the series, because it seriously is an amazing series.
Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs. I did not like this the first time I read it, I believe it was the summer in 2012, but since the sequel is coming out I want to re-read it and see if I want to continue with the series.
Shutter Island by Dennis Lehane. I feel like you could read this book 10 times and still feel like your mind has been twisted and turned.
Divergent by Veronica Roth. I read this book in one sitting, and I feel like I missed some stuff. So sometime this year or next year, I think I will re-read the series.
The Happiness Project by Gretchen Rubin. I am actually re-reading this right now - but it will take some time, since I am reading a chapter each month (the book is divided into months, so each chapter is a month). But in December I will review this!
Attachments by Rainbow Rowell. This book was great, but since I just borrowed a copy I am thinking about buying the book and re-reading it.
Warm Bodies (Warm Bodies #1) by Isaac Marion. The sequel is coming out sometime this year, so since I love Marion so much, I will re-read the prequel New Hunger (Warm Bodies #0.5) along with the first book in the series.

Which book do you want to re-read?

Top Ten Tuesday + Teaser Tuesday

Top Ten Tuesday is as usual hosted by the girls at The Broke and the Bookish. This Tuesday it is all about our resolutions for 2014 - I have chosen to only do bookish, since I have quite a few of them.

The first one is to read 50 books - whether it will be ebooks or physical copies don't matter, as long as they are books. Graphic novels, short stories, novellas and such do not count towards this one.

I do not read that many classics, so I want to read a few this year - at least one of them will probably be by
Austen...

I want to read some of the books I already own, since I got nearly 20 books for Christmas, I have a lot unread books on my shelves and there is some packages in the mail for me as well.

There is an exception for this one, if the book is in a series, then I will not review it until I have finished the series, and then I will do a series review instead.

Since I have a great local library I figured it was time to use it a bit more - and also spend a little less on books, since I want to buy some new stuff for my room and maybe some new clothes. And this way it will not do any harm, since I still get to read all the books I want - it is just free instead.

Since I always tend to read YA contemporary or horror books, I want to read something else. I really like reading fantasy - I just don't do it very often.. But I will chance that! I just got the first 3 books in the Mistborn series by Brandon Sanderson, and that is fantasy!

I really like read-a-thons, whether it is weeklong, 3 days or 24 hours - it is just a ton of fun. And since I know there is a read-a-thon in January, April, May & August - I have a great selection, and I already know I will participating in the one in January.

When I discovered Netgalley, I went a little crazy. I have 7 left, so it will not be that big a challenge - but I will complete it!

I want to make a "favorite book tubers" series, maybe a post each month for 3 months or a "favorite book bloggers" series. I have a few ideas.

I love reading and I love to write, so a dream of mine has always been to write a book. I will not set that as a resolution though. I just want to write a story, whether it be 5 or 50 pages - as long as I write something I am proud of. - I could actually also turn that into a mini-series!, that would be interesting... Let me know if you think turning my story into a mini-series so you all can read it, is a good idea!

The last one is, that I want to re-read some books, sometime this week or the next there will be a post with the bunch of books I want to re-read, stay tuned for that!

Teaser Tuesday is hosted by MizB at Should Be Reading. Want to join? All you have to do is grab your current read, flip open to a random page and share a non-spoiler teaser. Easy, right? Then just write it in the comments or make your own post and put the link in the comments. - But I like to share 2 teasers instead of one.

Alice in Tumblr-land
I am currently re-reading Alice in Tumblr-land by Tim Manley, I read this during October and November with
my sister, but I never really paid much attention to the stories or made a review - but that will change now!

These teasers will be a bit different because of the way the book is written. Every page is a new story, so instead of 2 teasers you get 2 actual stories from the book. How about that?

Remember to share your teasers and top tens in the comments below!

Top 13 Tuesday + Teaser Tuesday

Top Ten Tuesday is as usual hosted by the team at The Broke and The Bookish
This Tuesday it is all about the best books we read this year, since it is 2013, I wanted to choose 13 books instead of 10. But in no particular order:

  1. The Fault in Our Stars by John Green, I think you may have noticed how much I love this book, I think I chose TFiOS for most of the answers in the End of the Year Survey
  2. Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell. I just read this like, last week and OMG! This book was so good! I laughed, cried and was just way to excited about everything that happened! I was literally on the verge of tears most of the time.. Because I get way to emotional
  3. Unbreakable by Kami Garcia... In my review I explained how scared I got while reading this book - and that does not happen often. But all I have to say is that you seriously have to read this book - but only if you have the lights on! (review here)
  4. Warm Bodies by Isaac Marion. I seriously love Isaac Marion, he is an amazing author and storyteller. His short story Somnia, is actually my favourite one ever!. But how can you not love a book that is written from a sweet zombie's perspective?
  5. The Lorax by Dr. Seuss, the movie is one of my all-time favourites, so of course this is obviously one of my favourite books.
  6. Let it Snow by John Green, Lauren Myracle & Maureen Johnson. I loved this book, so many feelings, so many snowflakes! and all in all 3 wonderful intertwined stories. (review here)
  7. The Help by Kathryn Stockett, I love reading about segregation, because I think it is so interesting and macabre how it "worked". This book was so good, Stockett is amazing with words and voices. I had different voices in my head every time the story switched to another person - it was amazing
  8. The Happiness Project by Gretchen Rubin. This book is amazing! and that is all I have to say - everybody can probably relate to this book
  9. Divergent by Veronica Roth, I read this entire series and I really enjoyed it. I loved the idea about factions and having to choose where you feel like you belong. (series review here)
  10. Dash & Lily's Book of Dares by Rachel Cohn and David Levithan - this book is intriguing, fun, heart-warming and overall extremely enjoyable. I love everything about it!
  11. Attachments by Rainbow Rowell. This book was the first one I read from Rowell, and needless to say I LOVED it. Not as much as Fangirl - but nearly! I read it in one sitting and smiled the whole time!
  12. 4 to 16 Characters by Kelly Hourihan, I laughed every time Gary was in the picture and every time they were talking, Gary is such a fun, awkward and quirky character that you cannot do anything but love him! Jane was not my favourite main character ever, but I still enjoyed the book
  13. How the Grinch Stole Christmas by Dr. Seuss. I love children’s literature, it is so sweet and light-hearted. This one was not an exception - and it comes with a message that many children could learn from!

Catching Fire (The Hunger Games, #2)
Since I am taking a little break from reading, so I can spend some time with my boyfriend before going back to school, I am only reading 1 book right now, and that is Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins - which is tecnically a re-read. But lets get on with the teasers.

"There's no question of privacy. When it comes to my body, we have no secrets, these three people and me."

"But what can he do? The Games were such a hit here, where the berries were only a symbol of a desperate girl trying to save her lover."

Remember, that if you leave your link to either your Top Ten or Teaser I will gladly check them out and leave a comment! Happy reading!
