TBR Jar!

If you follow me on instagram, you probably already know that I recently made a TBR Jar. I first found out about it on booktube and I loved the idea. The idea is that you have to write a bunch of books on random slips on paper and then put them in your TBR jar, you can either choose books you HAVE to read on your shelves, books you want to re-read or you can choose to write down every unread book on your shelves like I did - there is a bunch of other choices. I have also included some of the books I want to re-read, because I have wanted to re-read them for a long time.

This "jar" will hopefully also help me with my TBR Pile challenge!

The first thing to do, is obviously to write all the titles (with or without the author's name). I chose to do mine on the computer and print them out, since I have slight OCD and I would seriously hate for the slips to be different sizes!

Then you just cut them out, fold them up and put them in your jar! and there you have it, a TBR jar!

I have some rules for myself when it comes to this jar - and I will advice you to do the same!

Rule 1: If I draw a book that has been on my shelf for a longer period of time, and I don't want to read it. I have to get rid of it.
Rule 2: If I draw a re-read and I'm not in the mood for a re-read, I can choose to get rid of the slip or put it back in the jar and draw another book.
Rule 3: If I draw a book I have had for a shorter period, I can choose to "mark" it with a red x, and the next time I draw it I HAVE to read it.

I will probably be drawing a book a month because I love surprises.

Do you have a TBR jar?

January Wrap Up

I really want to start doing monthly wrap ups, it will hopefully help keeping me on track with my resolutions and challenges, and I can go back and see what my favorite books have been and such in the future. All links in these posts will transport you to my reviews of the books - and not goodreads as they usually do.

This month I read 8 books toward my goal of 50 books, so thats great! The books are listed according to rating!

In January I also read half of White Space (Dark Passages #1) by Ilsa J. Bick. I did not enjoy it, so when I had read half of it, and was still not enjoying it, I marked it as a DNF (=did not finish). (You can read a teaser here)

The Last Olympian (Percy Jackson and The Olympians #5) by Rick Riordan (series review)

Living Dead Girl by Elizabeth Scott

UFO in her eyes by Xiaolu Guo
Erasmus Montanus eller Rasmus Berg (=Erasmus Montanus or Rasmus Berg) by Ludvig Holberg

Average book rating: 3.125 hearts

Favorite book of the month:
The Final Empire (Mistborn, #1)

I am actually doing very well with both challenges and resolutions.

For my TBR pile reading challenge, I have read 5 books:
4. UFO in her eyes by Xiaolu Guo

The TBR pile challenge is connected with my resolution of reading the books I already own, since every book I read from my bookshelves, counts towards that challenge.

For the Finish the Series challenge, I have finished 1 series:

For the Full House challenge, I have read 7 books
4. Less than 200 pages: Living Dead Girl by Elizabeth Scott
6. Book from a series: The Last Olympian (Percy Jackson and The Olympians #5) by Rick Riordan (series review)
7. Free or bought very cheaply: UFO in her eyes by Xiaolu Guo

If you want to see how well I am doing with my challenges, check out my Challenges page, since I am updating in regularly.

My 5. resolution is to "use the library more and cut back on buying books"... That resolution is not going that well. This month I read 2 books from the library (The Last Olympian and Living Dead Girl by Elizabeth Scott) and I bought 6 books... It is not that bad since I bought 3 of them for 1$ - the other 3 weren't that expensive either, 1 was 6$ and the last 2 was 4$.

My 6. resolution is to "venture out of my comfort zone". I have read 2 books this month. I read a nonfiction book, which was a biograhy of J.K. Rowling (Who is J.K.Rowling by Pam Pollack and Meg Belviso) . And I read an adult high fantasy book (The Final Empire (Mistborn #1) by Brandon Sanderson)

My 7. resolution is to "participate in read-a-thons" and since it was time for the Bout of Books 9.0 read-a-thon. I was of course participating in it, see my progress, goals and the books I read here.

My extra resolution is "re-read some books" and I re-read one book, and that was Alice in Tumblr-land by Tim Manley

If you want to see how well I am doing with my resolutions, check out my Resolutions page, since I am updating in regularly.

My little sister created her own blog this month, and it would make her day if you stopped by and maybe write a comment. She calls it The Secret Diary of a Bookaholic - and she has some spelling errors, but it's fine!

One of my friends also made a blog this month: Book-Munchee

I participated in the Bout of Books 9.0 read-a-thon, which was really fun! If you want to see how well I did, check my post here.

Mistborn by Brandon Sanderson, I found the wikia page for the series, and I just want to write all the things I know about the first book on there, but I don't know how... But I love checking it out and read about the different things!

I just learned to use Edelweiss! I have known about it since I started blogging, but it wasn't until I found this post on Book Riot, that I knew how to navigate and find the review copies on there.

My blog! I have a bunch of ideas for posts and mini-series, so I have tried to either write drafts or reached out to people this month. Since I am trying to put together a booktuber mini-series, and I want to make sure that they don't mind me using one of their videos.

Book Reviews:

Valentine's Day! Me and my boyfriend has been together for 14 months on Valentines and he asked me out. Last year we didn't go anywhere, because well, we had just gotten together. So this year he wants to do something special.

The release of Alienated (Alienated #1) by Melissa Landers - I can't wait!

How well did you do in January?

Series Review: Percy Jackson and The Olympians by Rick Riordan (NON-spoiler!)

Percy is a demigod - which means that 1 of his parents is a God. All these demigods is in danger, since monsters are after them, so they have to get to Camp Half-Blood - which is a camp for demigods. Some of the kids die on their way to the Camp, because the satyrs (=half man, half goat) have not found them. Percy's best friend Grover is actually a satyr, and his job is to protect Percy.

At Camp Half-blood there is 12 cabins, 1 for each Olympian God. Not all demigods know who their godly parent is. So they live in the Hermes cabin.

When you are at this camp, you train for combat - because demigods are never safe, except from within the borders of the camp. Some demigods go on quests - which means they have to leave the Camp and go out in the "real" world again, and fight monsters. Percy is one of those demigods who always go on quests.

Percy also gets some new friends, including Annabeth, daughter of Athena and Luke son of Hermes.

Tyson, which is introduced in book 2 is one of my all-time favorite character, he is so funny and I just love him. Everytime he is included in the books I smile and it just makes me happy!

I love that in these books, being dyslexic and having ADHD is not a negative thing, they are actually just symptoms if you are a demigod - and that is a great message for kids. Even though they have these disabilities, Riordan teaches them that it can be a positive thing.

Annabel is such a quirky character, she is brainy and not that girly. She knows how to take care of herself and does not rely on anyone. In the beginning she actually ignores Percy.

Grover, Percy's best friend and "protector" is a great character too. I remember laughing when I realized that he eats metal, I do not know why, but I just thought it was funny.

In the beginning I really liked Luke, but then stuff starts happening and BAM the love is gone!

With Clarisse, daughter of Ares, I have a love/hate relationship. At times I think she is the most bad ass character, and at other times, I just feel like she is a whining little baby... But thats how life is! You cannot just love or hate every character, sometimes there is the "inbetweeners".

This book has a bunch of different types of people, he mixes a lot of the "stereotypical" characters and turns them into something completely unique.

All he books are fast-paced and adventorous. Something happens on every page, and that definetely makes it a page-turner! At times though, I felt that the books were TO fast-paced, everything happened either to easily or to quick. The demigods did not have to fight to accomplish something, it just happened.
With that said, I still enjoyed it, and I kept reminding myself that this is a middle grade series!

I loved seeing Percy grow, reading about him becoming more sure about his new identity and himself. In the first book, Percy is 11 or 12 and in the last book he is 16.

Rick Riordan is a really good author, he knows how to take things and turn them into something entirely different. I mean, Mount Olympus (=the home of the Gods), lies on top of the Empire State building.

Since this book is centered around Greek mythology, it only makes sense to comment on it.

I love how Riordan incorporated Greek mythology into the modern world, it is briliantly done and I can only say WOW. Everything is incorporated into modern day perfectly, he has a place and answer for everything.

If you do not know that much about Greek mythology, I would recommend you using this site. It has everything, the Gods, the myths, the creatures etc.

Even though I really liked this series, I also felt it was missing something - but the ending was AMAZING! So I have decided that I have to give this series an overall rating of 4 hearts, since I really enjoyed it, and thought it was written wonderfully.

Top Ten Tuesday + Teaser Tuesday

Top Ten Tuesday is as usual hosted by the girls at The Broke and the Bookish. This Tuesday it is all about our resolutions for 2014 - I have chosen to only do bookish, since I have quite a few of them.

The first one is to read 50 books - whether it will be ebooks or physical copies don't matter, as long as they are books. Graphic novels, short stories, novellas and such do not count towards this one.

I do not read that many classics, so I want to read a few this year - at least one of them will probably be by
Austen...

I want to read some of the books I already own, since I got nearly 20 books for Christmas, I have a lot unread books on my shelves and there is some packages in the mail for me as well.

There is an exception for this one, if the book is in a series, then I will not review it until I have finished the series, and then I will do a series review instead.

Since I have a great local library I figured it was time to use it a bit more - and also spend a little less on books, since I want to buy some new stuff for my room and maybe some new clothes. And this way it will not do any harm, since I still get to read all the books I want - it is just free instead.

Since I always tend to read YA contemporary or horror books, I want to read something else. I really like reading fantasy - I just don't do it very often.. But I will chance that! I just got the first 3 books in the Mistborn series by Brandon Sanderson, and that is fantasy!

I really like read-a-thons, whether it is weeklong, 3 days or 24 hours - it is just a ton of fun. And since I know there is a read-a-thon in January, April, May & August - I have a great selection, and I already know I will participating in the one in January.

When I discovered Netgalley, I went a little crazy. I have 7 left, so it will not be that big a challenge - but I will complete it!

I want to make a "favorite book tubers" series, maybe a post each month for 3 months or a "favorite book bloggers" series. I have a few ideas.

I love reading and I love to write, so a dream of mine has always been to write a book. I will not set that as a resolution though. I just want to write a story, whether it be 5 or 50 pages - as long as I write something I am proud of. - I could actually also turn that into a mini-series!, that would be interesting... Let me know if you think turning my story into a mini-series so you all can read it, is a good idea!

The last one is, that I want to re-read some books, sometime this week or the next there will be a post with the bunch of books I want to re-read, stay tuned for that!

Teaser Tuesday is hosted by MizB at Should Be Reading. Want to join? All you have to do is grab your current read, flip open to a random page and share a non-spoiler teaser. Easy, right? Then just write it in the comments or make your own post and put the link in the comments. - But I like to share 2 teasers instead of one.

Alice in Tumblr-land
I am currently re-reading Alice in Tumblr-land by Tim Manley, I read this during October and November with
my sister, but I never really paid much attention to the stories or made a review - but that will change now!

These teasers will be a bit different because of the way the book is written. Every page is a new story, so instead of 2 teasers you get 2 actual stories from the book. How about that?

Remember to share your teasers and top tens in the comments below!

2013 in Conclusion and Looking Forward to 2014

For 2013 I had only 1 reading goal/challenge, and that was the Goodreads one where you set a goal of how many books you want to read/hope to read the upcoming year. My goal for this was 50 and I can say that I have definetely completed that goal!

I have read 24 graphic novels, 24 short stories and novellas, 1 audiobook, 19 ebooks and 51 physical books. All in all: 123 which means I have completed my goal 245% (according to Goodreads) (apparently Goodreads will not accept that I read Hunger Games this year)

2013 Reading Challenge

2013 Reading Challenge
AmandaEmma (little miss reader) has completed her goal of reading 50 books in 2013!
hide

For 2014 I have a bunch of updates, challenges and goals.

In January me and Anatea from Anatea's Bookshelf are doing a read-a-long on the Book Thief by Markus Zusak.

I have found a Book Buddy! And that is Jayd from books, food & other things. We will be reading 6 books together (1 every two months) during 2014. There will be a discussion on one blog and a wrap up and rating post on the other about each book! The 6 books are:

  1. Antigoddess by Kendare Blake
  2. An Abundance of Katherines by John Green
  3. More Than This by Patrick Ness
  4. Splintered by A.G. Howard
  5. The Summoning by Kelley Armstrong
  6. The Hundred-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out of the Window and Disappeared by Jonas Jonasson

I have also joined a book club where we will be reading 3 books 1 each month from February through April. .

When it comes to reading challenges, I have joined a bunch. If you want to see how well I am doing or my plans for the reading challenge. Just click here and it will take you to my reading challenge page.

Bookish

This is just about reading books on your TBR list or from your TBR pile, I will try this at level easy, meaning 1-10 books. Any genre, length or format of book counts, as long as it is a book that's been sitting on your shelf for some time now. Short stories and novellas are OK, too! Only books released in 2013 and earlier! NO  2014 ARCs and 2014 fresh-off-the-press releases allowed!

This one is, surprisingly enough, about finishing series. I will try this at level 3, meaning I will hopefully complete at least 3 series during 2014.

This one is a bit different than the other challenges. You have a card with 25 slots, and within each one there is a category, and you have to read a book for each one of those - which in the end means 25 books.

And then there will be some changes blogwise,
  • I was planning to have my new design ready for January, but then I finished earlier, and decided, that I should just change the blog sooner rather than later. So the design you see know is the new one.
  • When it comes to posts I have made a "schedule"
    • Tuesday: Top Ten Tuesday + Teaser Tuesday
    • Thursday: TBR Thursday
    • Friday: #FridayReads
    • Saturday: a review
    • That means, that on Mondays, Wednesdays and Sundays I can write about what I want!
But I am thinking about making a "Monday Madness" post, with a bunch of different things, but I am not sure yet!
  • There will also be "monthly wrap ups" with a bunch of different stuff.
